It’s the beginning of the end for Harry and his friend. Opening this week HP and the DH Part 1 is the first of two movies to conclude Harry’s ongoing battle against the evil Voldemort. Based on the 7th and final Potter book the stakes are high as the boy wizard embarks on his most dangerous adventure yet. Fans have been waiting years for this moment so it’s now time to find out if the movie can live up to everyone’s expectations. DH Part 1 sees Harry, Hermione and Ron on the run. Neither the safety of Hogwarts nor Professor Dumbledore’s guidance is at their disposal. They are looking for the four magical Horcruxes in an effort to defeat Lord Voldemort once and for all. This film has a very different field to it than previous movies in the series. It is dark, somber and sad. Driving home the desperate situation that the game is in. The movie is also amazing to look at with beautiful cinematography and some really cool set pieces. I especially liked when our heros snuck into the Ministry of Magic. But real fans will love the DH because it’s so character based. Yes, we do get the infamous camping scenes that some people felt slow in the pacing of the book, but we’ve watched these three grow up for years now and this attachement really pays off here. DR, RG and EW give their best performances to date leading to some pretty dramatic stuff regarding Ron’s jealousy towards Harry and Hermione. If you think HP is just for kids, you may be surprised how sexually charged some of these scenes are. Oh, how they grow up so fast. There are a couple of changes from the original text that will make some fans grumble. The ending is pretty abrupt. But that is expected if you take a book and arbitrarily split it into two. And while it leaves you a bit unfulfilled just remember that we’ve only got six months to go until part 2 is released. But when all is said and done DH is one of the very best films in the HP series. It’s a well-done emotional journey getting four out of five stars.
